8. Describe your most significant professional
accomplishment in detail.
|

From
2006 to 2008, our companies experienced phenomenal growth, growth in excess
of 100%, due to a variety of factors. While the considerable growth our
companies experienced was invaluable, we were met with challenges of
expansion planning and strategy for the future. One of the most pressing
issues we were faced with was how to finance the growth, a facet in which I
was highly instrumental. At 27 years of age, as CFO of Jones Companies, I
lead and secured the largest asset-based credit facility BancorpSouth has
issued.

9. What other professional accomplishments
have you achieved in the last 3 years?
|
|
As noted in my current job
responsibilities in #2 above, I am responsible for all risk management
and insurance matters for our companies. I lead the transition of taking our
worker’s
compensation program from fully insured to partially self-insured which saved
our companies in excess of $400k in worker’s compensation expenses in the first
year. While this savings was considerable, the transition to self-insuring
created an enormous need for us to become an even safer company. As such, I
expanded our safety department which drastically decreased our work-time
losses and on-the-job injuries. This has created awareness of safety in the
workplace and transformed our culture.
This year, I was involved in the development of the BP oil
spill clean-up efforts. Jones Companies was contracted to help participate in
the clean-up response effort, where we assembled a team of over 650 employees
to clean the beaches and islands of
Sandy Hook office and the Coast of

the CFO, I am directly responsible for the oversight and supervision of all
accounting, human resource and risk management personnel across the
companies. This group comprises approximately 20 employees.

There isn’t
a holding entity that these companies fall under, but they are referred to
collectively as “Jones Companies,” as they are all owned by the L. Brett
Jones family. Combined, the companies have in excess of $200 million in sales
and employ approximately 350 people. Currently due to the BP oil spill
clean-up effort, we employ over 900 individuals.
The following two business entities of the above were
selected as the “Fast 40: Mississippi’s 40 Fastest Growing Companies” by the
Mississippi Business Journal – Dixie Mat & Hardwood, Co. received second place in
2008 and first place in 2010 and Jones Lumber Company, Inc. received tenth
place in 2008 and third place in 2010.

4. Over what size budget do you have authority? I exercise authority over
budgeting for all of the companies. Sum of all budgets including payroll,
fixed asset expenditures and operations exceed $150M annually.

5. How would you describe the contribution you
make to the business community?
|
|||
|
I
am an advocate of deferring to experts and seeking advice when one is not
clear on an issue. As such, I frequently consult with our attorney, bankers,
insurance agents, etc. to ensure I have an accurate depiction of each
situation. In that, I feel as though my contribution to the business
community is my subsequent discussion and sharing of this knowledge with my
peers through constant, consistent networking.

6. What are your most valuable personal skills
or abilities?
|
|||
|
I
consider myself patient. I am not quick to react and take a calm, calculated
approach to problem solving. Additionally, I am not plagued by indecision; I
am able to derive a conclusion/solution, communicate this clearly and with
confidence, then let it play out.
|
|||
|
7. What leadership skills do you look for in
others?
|
|||
|
To
me, I consider the most critical leadership skill to be integrity. From
integrity derives all other important characteristics and traits of a leader.
If you are a person with a high level of integrity, you are able to respect
others while also gaining their respect.

8. What advice would you give other individuals
who want to “make a difference”?
|
|||
|
I
would advise others to value their integrity above all else. Integrity is the
cornerstone of leadership, and if you put make this a priority, all other
personal and professional endeavors will fall into place.

9. Who are your role models and why?
|
|||
|
Dr. Morris Stocks, Provost of The University of
Mississippi and former Accounting professor, is a man I consider a role model
and who possesses the utmost integrity. I first met Dr. Stocks in 2000 when I
became a student at The University of Mississippi. He was always steadfast
and unwavering in his actions and character. He was a man of his word and
held me accountable. For instance, any missed days in accounting class didn’t
go unnoticed by Dr. Stocks. In fact, he would give quizzes on days I was absent
in one of his many “teachable moments” as I dubbed them – noting to me later
that he gave the quiz because he saw I wasn’t there. He cared about me and
his students’ success.
Dr. Stocks truly “walked the walk,” and I will forever
consider him a mentor and friend.
